As part of my portfolio for my application to Next Level Games, I created the Glueigi mechanic and designed a short level to demonstrate how players can learn the mechanic and use it to solve puzzles.
I started this project in May and didn't have much time to iterate on it or record a video showcasing the mechanic in detail while shipping Gears of War: E-Day.
Character & Animation: Battle Royale Hero PBR
Environment: POLYGON - Horror Asylum asset pack
Wall hiding shader: Wall Hiding System shader
Glue VFX: Slime VFX
All gameplay mechanics developed from scratch using Unreal Blueprints scripting.
Create a new mechanic for Gooigi that plays differently from Luigi.
Create new co-op gameplay experiences.
Allow players to interact with the physics system in different ways.
Fire melts Gooigi, transforming it into Glueigi.
Glueigi can slow down moving platforms and stop physics objects, such as a seesaw.
Glueigi can be despawned and respawned as Gooigi by the player.
Glueigi can be moved very slowly using motion controls.
Fireballs can be lit by torches.
Once a fireball melts Gooigi, it is extinguished.
Glueigi can slow down the player.
Glueigi can slow down moving platforms.
Glueigi can stop physics objects from moving.
Glueigi can slow down enemies that are on the ground.
Glueigi can slow down the player.
Glueigi can keep the player grounded during strong winds.
Glueigi can temporarily stop the boss from moving, exposing its weak spot.
Well-timed despawning of Glueigi can be used to redirect physics objects against the boss, such as moving rocks or a seesaw.
Use fire hazards to prevent Gooigi players from accessing certain areas.
Use Glueigi to connect and disconnect bridges, allowing objects to move across platforms.
Use Glueigi as a hazard to slow down the opposing team.
Glueigi functions more as a tool for Luigi than as a player-controlled character. Since Luigi can choose when to despawn Glueigi and revert it back into Gooigi, this can create moments of friendly conflict in co-op play. However, it may also make Player 2 feel less empowered if they have limited control over when Glueigi can be used.
Good puzzles are often more about thinking than execution. If players see both a fireball and a physics object in the same room, they may immediately identify the intended solution. At that point, the challenge shifts from problem-solving to execution, which may not be as engaging.
To address this, the mechanic should be introduced in situations where players can discover multiple possible interactions before being presented with more explicit puzzle solutions.
